１月23日、パリ・サンジェルマンのフランス杯ストラスブール戦で右足の第五中足骨を折り、全治約10週間と診断されたブラジル代表のエース、ネイマール。故障から約１カ月後の２月21日、母国へ一時帰国した。
昨年２月末にもほぼ同じ箇所を骨折し、このときは手術を選択した。しかし、リハビリに予想以上の時間がかかり、Ｗ杯ロシア大会にベストコンディションで臨むことができず、期待を裏切ることになった。
今回の故障に関しては、クラブと本人が手術をしないことを選択。フランス国内での治療とリハビリを経て、本人の希望で10日余り母国に滞在することになった。ただしその間も、治療とリハビリを継続するため、クラブの医療スタッフが同行した。27日には松葉杖を手放すことになり、ネイマールは自身のインスタグラムで「バイバイ。これでお前とはおさらばだ」とはしゃいだ。
折しも、ブラジルはカーニバルの季節。３月１日から５日まで、交通機関を除くほぼすべての機能が停止した。
ネイマールは”ブラジル音楽の首都”と呼ばれる北部サルバドールで、１日深夜から２日明け方にかけて、カーニバルをスタンドから見物。見ているだけでは飽き足らず、音楽に合わせて激しく身体をくねらせて踊った。その傍らには、19歳の金髪の女性歌手の姿が。さらに、４日深夜から５日未明にかけて、今度はリオデジャネイロのカーニバルを見物。人気歌手アニータさんとキスをかわして大きな話題となった。
このようなネイマールを、専門家は「長時間立っているだけでも足に負担がかかる。あれほど身体を使って踊るなど、もってのほか」と断罪。ブラジル国内の各メディアも「プロ意識がまったく欠如している」と糾弾した。
国民の間からは、「さすがネイマール。サンバを踊ってケガのリハビリをするとは」の声も上がったが、フランスのスポーツ紙「レキップ」は、「足の骨を折ってドリブルはできなくとも、サンバを踊るのはまったく問題ないらしい」と皮肉った。
５日の飛行機でパリへ戻ったネイマールは、６日にパリSGの本拠地で行なわれた欧州チャンピオンズリーグの決勝トーナメント１回戦、マンチェスター・ユナイテッドとの第２戦を観戦した。アウェーでの第１戦は２−０で勝っており、敗れても１点差なら勝ち上がれる状況だったが、アディショナル・タイムにPKを決められて１−３と惨敗。チームは今年もベスト16で姿を消した。
もしパリSGが勝ち上がっていれば、ネイマールは４月に行なわれる準々決勝に出場できる可能性があったが、その望みは露と消えた。ブラジルのあるインターネット・メディアは、「ネイマールはブラジルでカーニバルの熱狂に身を任せ、パリで”灰の水曜日”（カトリックで試練の期間に入ることを意味する）を味わった」と伝えた。
このところ、ブラジルの国内メディア、国民のネイマールへの視線は厳しさを増す一方だ。
2016年にリオ五輪でブラジルに初の金メダルをもたらしてから、2018年Ｗ杯南米予選で活躍した頃まで、ネイマールは国民的英雄だった。しかし、ロシアＷ杯前に大きな故障をして国中を心配させ、その不安が的中してロシアではさんざんな出来に。セレソンが早々と敗退する結果を招き、国中を失望させた。
今季も、なかなか調子が上がらないなかで、今回の長期離脱である。
負傷したのは本人のせいではないし、地道にリハビリに励んで早期復帰を目指していれば、どこからも文句は出ないはずだ。しかし、故障直後の２月初めにも、松葉杖をつきながらパリで派手な誕生日パーティを開いて顰蹙（ひんしゅく）を買うなど、プロ意識を疑われるような行動が多い。そのため、「もう27歳なのに、あまりにも精神的に幼い」「最近、彼が話題になるのはピッチ外のことばかり。本当にフットボーラーなのか」「すでにキャリアのピークを過ぎたのではないか」といった批判や懐疑の声が渦巻いているのだ。
「リオネル・メッシの脇役であり続けたら、いつまでたっても世界ナンバーワンの選手にはなれない」と考えて、2017年８月にバルセロナからパリSGへ移籍したネイマール。だが、ここまでのところ、キャリア上は後退を続けている感がある。チーム内でも主役の座をフランス代表FWキリアン・ムバッペに奪われつつあり、「パリSG移籍は大失敗だった」という見方が一般的だ。
筆者も、ネイマールの最大の問題は彼の人間性にあると考えており、人生とフットボールとの向き合い方を根本的に見直さない限り、将来は厳しいのではないかと予想している。
とはいえ、挽回のチャンスは残されている。まずは今年６月から７月にかけて母国で開催されるコパ・アメリカだ。この大会ですばらしいプレーを見せてセレソンを優勝に導くことができれば、ブラジル国内での彼への批判はひとまず沈静化するだろう。しかし、もしまた期待を裏切るようであれば、セレソンでも主役の座を追われ、ネイマール不要論が噴出する可能性は大いにある。
